Summer 2011- WEEK 1 (7/10/11)
This week, we introduced ourselves, discussed the program goals and came up with a list of basic ground rules. We did a few icebreakers such as: Name Game, Who's Your Neighbor? and Categories.
What's in a Name? We also told each other what our Chinese name is and what it means. Then, we each shared how we feel about our names, answering such questions as: What is it like to tell the story of your name? How does your name influence your identity? Do you feel your name belongs to you? Have your name had a positive or negative influence in your life or in the life of someone closely related to you?

Important Information:
Program Goals:
1. Our program goals are two-fold. First, we will build community and discuss how social, political, and historical circumstances have shaped Asian American communities. Second, we will learn to be community advocates by collecting oral histories from immigrants and creating powerful stories that others will read.
2. We seek to achieve these goals by becoming comfortable bloggers and by sharing our unique stories. In this class, we will identify different kinds of writing styles and work to develop a knowledge-base of effective writing strategies, including persuasive writing such as Op-Eds. We will also learn how to ask the right questions and answer them ourselves, how to start a dialogue, and find a central theme around which to build your story.

Rules to blogging:
No profanities what so ever! Do not use any bad words. This blog is a positive and encouraging space, we will not accept any posts that use profanities.
Write how you speak. However, try your best to keep it grammatically correct. We want the blog to sound like you are speaking to an audience. You can keep the tone to your writing relaxing and not so "rigid" in format.
We encourage opinions. We want to know your opinions so write whatever you feel is on your mind.
Don't write anything hurtful or distasteful. We encourage challenging opinions but do it in a respectful way. If you are unsure, ask your mentors.
Spell check! Check your spelling.
Personality counts. This is your time to show who you are!
