About Chinese Progressive Association (CPA)

Picture
Based in New York's Chinatown/Lower East Side, the Chinese Progressive Association (CPA) works to promote social and economic justice for the Chinese community. CPA was founded to improve the community’s living and working conditions. We actively involve residents in the decision-making processes that affect our lives. We sponsor Neighborhood Day, a community-wide environmental health fair attended by hundreds of people. We have also completed a survey report about asthma and air quality in Chinatown. For more information about the report, contact us at: [email protected]

Civic Participation
The Chinese Political Empowerment Project conducts voter registration and educational workshops for new voters.

VOLUNTEER

Volunteers play a crucial role at the Chinese Progressive Association. They come from all walks of life - community residents, working professionals, young people, parents, and grandparents. To learn more about how you can volunteer, please contact us at: [email protected]. Or you may complete and return the volunteer form to be added to our mailing list for volunteer opportunities.

Current Volunteer Opportunities:

Teach English as a Second Language or Citizenship Class in Chinatown

For many new immigrants, learning English is a first step to becoming a full participant in American society. Help them take that first step by becoming a volunteer teacher or tutor in our English or Citizenship classes.

English classes help students improve their communication skills. Citizenship classes help students prepare for the U.S. citizenship test.

Volunteers work in a team to plan and teach the class. This fun and rewarding experience gives you a chance to make a difference in the lives of others. A strong desire to help and work with new immigrants is a must. Prior teaching experience is helpful. Bilingual skills are not required.
