Fall 2011- WEEK 2 (10/2/11)

Agenda:
1. Icebreaker: Rock, Paper, Scissor Championships
2. Census 2010/Statistics Presentation and Discussion
3. Assignment Show and Tell (One item or picture of a person, place or thing that you think is American.)
4. "Belonging" Discussion: When did you feel you belonged in America?  What makes people feel American?
   --> Activity: Developmental Timeline: Students were asked to write on index cards how they felt when they came to the US (past), how they currently feel having lived in the US for a few years (present) and how they think they will feel four to five years from now (future).  Then we made a timeline and the students chose one word that represent each stage and told the group why they chose that word.
5. Assign groups for presentation/blog posting project
6. Announcement: No Session next week on 10/9/11

Census 2010 and Statistics about Asians in NYC:
Our very own, mentor Linda, showed the students a PowerPoint presentation about the 2010 Census and some statistics regarding Asians in NYC.

Groups (Mentees- Mentors):
1: Jasmine/Ben- Bernice
2: Ming/Ann- Rena, Lauren, Yishion
3: Muhammad/Zhoufeng- Linda 
4: Suzanne/Amy- Maggie

ASSIGNMENT: Choose one of the following topics: 1. US Multicultural History, 2. NY Chinatown and Community Organization, 3. Asian American History/Immigration and Civil Rights.  Then, from the list of subtopics, choose 2-3 you are interested in doing your presentation/blog posting on.  Bring this list to the next session and discuss with your partner and mentor.
